To celebrate Black History Month, InFlexWeTrust will be honoring influential members of Black history daily throughout the month. Today, we are honoring Madam C.J. Walker. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove and would go on to become the first female self-made millionaire. Madam C.J. Walker is a huge part of not only Black History, but Women’s History as well. During her lifetime, she not only became a successful businesswoman but was also a philanthropist. Walker made a name for herself creating and manufacturing beauty products that catered to African America women. Read more about her life and accomplishments below.

Julie A.

Like many women during the time, Walker experienced issues with balding and scalp disease and began to mix different elements together to produce effective hair care products. She was one of the first people to use sulfur in shampoo and hair products. She started her business as a mail order business out of Denver and then began traveling to show women how to properly care for their hair and skin. Following the success of her business, Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, she began touring the country educating African American women on how to build their own businesses. We continue to remember her contributions and legacy today.
