Pierre Toussaint, a former slave from the Caribbean, became a well-known Black philanthropists in the United States. Toussaint was Born in Haiti on Jan. 27, 1766, and was brought to New York City by his owners in 1787. He then gained his freedom and became a very popular and successful hairdresser in the wealthier parts are NYC. Toussaint and his wife then became known to performed alot of charitable works, opening their home as an orphanage and also as a place to help others find employment. He gave money to Catholic charities and helped raise money to build St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York. Toussaint became and Icon for Haiti and His People. Many Haitian refugees went to New York in seek of Toussaint’s help. Sadly, Toussaint died in 1853 at the age of 87.
