Sosan Firooz is the pioneer of Afghanistan’s female rap game but it comes with a high price. Death threats in the form of emails, text messages, phone calls, have been piling in since she started performing her raps infront of men. One anonymous caller even threatened to behead Firooz and her mother if she doesn’t stop rapping but Sosan doesn’t worry about the threats. She’s using rap as a way to get her message across, and if she can reach people in her area maybe she can shake things up and change some opinions on what women can and can’t do, rap is empowering like that. Many Afghani women have quit singing careers before due to threats from the Taliban, but Firooz won’t let anything deter her from expressing herself and I respect that. Hit the jump for more.

Firooz raps in Dari, one of the two main languages of the country, about growing up in neighboring Iran, about the oppression she faces because she is a woman. Though she is only 23 years old she has a wealth of experiences to draw from.
