Hurricane Sandy might have hit the northeast coast only a week ago but Mother Nature did not wait long to hit us with a nor’easter winter storm, “Athena.” The winter storm is expected to bring wind gusts up to 65 mph with 6 inches of snow; making a possibility of coastal flooding, tress falling, power line downs and power outage. The strongest winds will likely be experienced over the Twin Forks of Long Island. But we are expected to have damaging winds tonight across Long Island, New York City, and coastal Connecticut. Strong winds are expected across interior Connecticut and the remainder of the New York City metro area. High Wind Warnings are expected to remain in effect until 4 am EST Thursday and as of now the snow should stop around 1:30 am.
As of Wednesday afternoon, roughly 639,000 were still without power in the Northeast. This is a remarkable drop from the peak of roughly 8.6 million one week ago. Sadly, 112 have been confirmed dead from Sandy in the U.S., including Puerto Rico.
Now, Winter Storm Athena, a nor’easter, is bringing yet more high winds, rain, coastal flooding, even snow to parts of the Northeast.
Four healthcare facilities in the Rockaways region of New York City have also been evacuated, as a precaution to protect the health and safety of residents and staff. The facilities include three nursing homes: Park Nursing Home (181 residents), Ocean Promenade Nursing Center (91 residents) and Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation (180 residents), as well as one adult care center, Surfside Manor Home for Adults (173 residents).
