France has certainly ruffled some feathers with the announcement of their plan to make abortions and contraception free to everyone, including minors. Right now, France’s national medical insurance pays for abortions for minors and the poor and other women are given back at least 80% of the procedure cost. Now under a new law, abortions for minors and the poor will remain free and all women will be fully reimbursed for their abortion. Contraception will be offered for free for minors ages 15 to 18. Some groups have begun to complain because only certain doctors offer abortion services and will most likely capitalize on the government paying for the abortions. The bill is waiting to head to the Senate and is said to pass without any major issue.
Currently, France’s national medical insurance fully pays for abortions for minors and the poor, while other women are reimbursed for up to 80 percent of the procedure’s cost, which can be as much as (EURO)450 ($580). Contraception is partially reimbursed.
The bill, which passed the National Assembly on Friday, would make all abortions free and would also pay for contraception for those between 15 and 18. It now goes to the Senate, where it is likely to pass.
