RED HOOK — An NYPD sergeant shot and killed an armed man during a prostitution sting in Red Hook Thursday night, police said.
Cops pulled over a car at Henry and Huntington streets near Brooklyn-Queens Expressway about 10 p.m. after the men inside, including the alleged gunman, were suspected of soliciting an undercover officer, an NYPD spokesman said.
That’s when the suspect bolted from the car and the sergeant and at least one other cop gave chase, the spokesman said.
When they caught up to the suspect at West 9th Street and Hamilton Avenue, a struggle ensued, police said. At some point, the man drew a Kel Tec 9mm semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at the officers, police said.
The sergeant fired a single shot, hitting the man in the head, the NYPD spokesman said.
The man, whom police did not identify, died on scene. An NYPD spokesman said the man had numerous prior arrests for robbery, assault and narcotics.
A gun was recovered from the scene, the spokesman said.
One officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The three men who remained in the car are in police custody for questioning. They have not been arrested, police said.
