Sir Elton John is looking back at what could have been the best years of his life and can only see the drug addiction he battled with. Â He admits he was wasted for a big part of his life all while he saw many people die around him because of drugs. It is a time of his life that he should have been able to look back on with pride.
But Sir Elton John has confessed his golden years were ruined due to his addiction to drugs.
The Goodbye Yellow Brick Road favourite even admitted he could not conquer his substance abuse problems, despite the fact some of his closest associates lost their lives because of it.
In a forthcoming interview on Today, the 65-year-old said: ‘I wasted such a big part of my life. I was a drug addict and self-absorbed.
‘You know, I was having people die right, left, and center around me, friends.
‘And yet I didn’t stop the life that I had, which is the terrible thing about addiction. It’s that – you know, it’s that bad of a disease.’
The flamboyant hitmaker also confessed to interviewer Matt Lauer he is wracked with guilt for being ‘consumed’ by drugs while the AIDS epidemic ravaged the gay community around him in the early 80’s.
It is particularly pertinent for the Candle In The Wind star, as he has raised over $275million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation which he founded in 1992.
The singer’s interview is expected to air on Today next week.
However, it is not the first time he has lifted the lid on the depths of depravity he plumbed due to his drug use.
In 2010 he told Piers Morgan how he almost died due to his problem, saying he came ‘very close.’
The Tumbleweed Connection star added: ‘I mean, I would have an epileptic seizure and turn blue, and people would find me on the floor and put me to bed, and then 40 minutes later I’d be snorting another line.
