RIO GRANDE DO SUL, Brazil (KTLA) — Over 500 penguins washed ashore on the coast of Brazil and marine experts are working to determine what caused their death.

In total, 512 birds have been found on a 50 kilometer span of oceanfront in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to Brazilian television news chanel Globo.

According to veterinarians, the Magellenic penguins are normally migrating from Argentina to San Paulo, escaping colder weather.
This is not the first time the birds have been found washing ashore along Brazil’s coast. Earlier this month, 21 birds were found dead off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in one day.

On preliminary investigation, the birds do not appear to be sick, officials said.

Further tests will be conducted to determine what caused the deaths.
