In the seconds before her life was cut short, Amber Wilson may have recognized her killer.
The 18-year-old former Linden High School cheerleader who was gunned down in an attempted robbery monday night, told her assailant to “knock it off” and threatened to call her older brother just before she was shot in the head on Hussa Street, two of the teen’s close friends and a source with knowledge of the investigation said Wednesday.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was not authorized to discuss the case with the media.
A spokesperson for the Union County Prosecutor’s Office declined to comment Wednesday, but said detectives are actively pursuing all leads in the hunt for Wilson’s killer.
Investigators have said Wilson and a friend were approached by a mugger as they walked along Hussa Street at around midnight Monday. Wilson was shot after a verbal exchange, investigators have said.
The friend, who was not identified, was not injured. The killer remains at large.
Wednesday, dozens of candles still lined the area near where the shooting occurred. Several cars slowed as they passed by, and at least one woman stopped her van and said a prayer.
