Taking a cab ride in New York City is about to get a lot more expensive.
The Taxi and Limousine Commission formally approved a 17% fare hike Thursday that will go into effect in September. Click below to find out more.
The average cost of a typical taxi ride of nearly 3 miles will rise from about $13 to about $14, the TLC said.
The $45 fixed price for a ride between Kennedy Airport and Manhattan will climb to $52.
And all the extra dough will go to the cabbies — not the fat-cat fleet owners, whose petition for a piece of the fare hike was turned down by the TLC.
Before the vote, TLC chairman David Yassky said a raise for hard-working cabbies was long overdue.
“I think taxi passengers understand that a driver needs to earn a decent living,” Yassky said.
Not one taxi rider spoke against the increase — the first in six years — at the two public hearings held by the TLC, he noted.
Delaying the hike until September allows the agency time to publish the rate change and gives drivers time to have their meters recalibrated
