New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may be tight-lipped about his ambitions for a run at the White House, but his hand may have been tipped by another influential Democrat: his dad.
At a recent celebration of his 80th birthday, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo discussed at length the possibility that his son may someday “have an opportunity to serve at a higher level, to serve the people of the United States,†several of the roughly 100 guests present told The New York Times.
He also called his son “the best governor in modern times.â€
Andrew Cuomo has been deliberately tight-lipped about his plans for 2016.
The Times said Cuomo believes his father’s public flirtation with a White House bid in the late 1980s and early 1990s may have ultimately undermined his authority as governor of N.Y.

During an April press conference, Cuomo alluded to his father’s experience while tamping down speculation about his own national ambitions.
“I’ve seen this movie before – actually, in this room,†Cuomo told reporters during a press conference in State Capitol’s Red Room. “There’s like a whole new déjà vu going on for me. So I know this play and I know how it turns out.â€
He said that once you start talking about your own aspirations, bipartisan cooperation “goes out the window.â€
Other high-profile Democrats frequently mentioned as potential 2016 presidential candidates include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden.
