It’s really hard to think that a movie about a seductive flirty bear did amazing box office numbers two weekends in a row. But it’s true! Although, Ted didn’t hit the number 1 spot it still brought it’s total earnings to about $120 million. Hit the jump to find out what movie beat it out.
The weekend box office headlines: Spider-Man was solid if not quite superheroic, “Savages†surprised, and Katy Perry . . . well, she at least has her day job.
“The Amazing Spider-Man†(Sony) was an easy No. 1, taking in about $65 million at North American theaters, for a total of $140 million since opening on Tuesday. Comparisons are difficult, but the first “Transformers†movie, which opened on the Tuesday before the Fourth of July in 2007, took in about $172 million in its first six days, after adjusting for inflation. Sony called the response to its latest Spider-Man film “a spectacular success by any measure†and noted that the movie took in an additional $201.6 million overseas.
“Ted†(Universal) was a robust second in North America, selling about $32.6 million in tickets, for a two-week total of $120.2 million, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data. “Brave†(Walt Disney) was third, with an estimated $20.2 million in sales, lifting its three-week total to $174.5 million. Oliver Stone’s R-rated crime drama “Savages†(Universal) got off to a better-than-expected start in fourth place, with about $16.2 million in ticket sales; the film cost $45 million to make. “Magic Mike†(Warner Brothers) was fifth, with $15.6 million in sales, for a two-week total of $72.8 million. The weekend’s other major release, “Katy Perry: Part of Me†(Paramount), fizzled in eighth place, taking in about $7.2 million, for a total of $10.3 million since opening.
