Paul Allen’s magical life continues. The Microsoft co-founder and guitarist has a new band, Paul Allen and the Natural Born Swimmers — and you’ll hear one of their songs if you listen closely to a scene toward the end of “Magic Mike,†the new film from Steven Soderbergh about male strippers at a Florida club.
Yes, it helps sometimes to be a billionaire with Hollywood connections. But the tune is actually pretty good, and it’s easy to understand why it made the soundtrack.
Here’s the song, called Divine, written by Allen and Seattle musician Douglas Barnett. The vocalist is Amy Keys.
The back story, we’re told, is that Allen knows a producer on Magic Mike who knew that he was working on new songs. When the producer heard Divine, he liked it, and decided to put it in the movie. It plays in the background in a restaurant scene involving the film’s star, Channing Tatum.
The Natural Born Swimmers are a new band, with different members from Allen’s previous band, Grown Men. There’s no release date yet for their new album, but it will contain all original material.
Allen, who grew up idolizing Jimi Hendrix and is responsible for Seattle’s Experience Music Project, was a past investor in Dreamworks SKG, and he’s involved in the music scene thanks in part to his celebrity friends.
In his memoir “Idea Man,†Allen tells a story about conspiring with U2′s Bono to get a reluctant Mick Jagger to sing “Satisfaction†at a party, as Allen played the signature riff.
