It’s a shame that we have even one homeless student in America. But over a million? That’s an epidemic.
According to a new report released by the U.S. Department of Education, the number of homeless children enrolled during the 2010-2011 school year was 1,065,794.
Being homeless is tough for anyone, but it’s especially difficult for students. As their families move from shelter to shelter, they often have to change schools, severely disrupting their education.
According to the report, only about half of students registered as homeless scored proficient on standardized reading and math tests.
The scariest part? The report’s numbers are up 13 percent from 2009-2010. Assuming the trend has continued, we could already have 1.2 million homeless children in American schools today.
