A former high school teacher in Kentucky admitted Tuesday to engaging in sexual trysts with a student last fall, according to reports.
Andrea Conners, a married mother of two, will avoid trial after changing her plea from not guilty in May. But without a plea deal, the 34-year-old faces up to five years in prison on one count of first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
The former business teacher at Highlands High School in Fort Thomas will be sentenced Aug. 8 in Campbell Circuit Court. Her husband, Brian, a principal of a nearby junior high school, was reportedly beside her in the courtroom.
Conners declined to comment after the hearing, according to the Enquirer.
Her attorney, Rob Dziech, previously said in a statement that the case was “going to be a hard time for everyone.â€
Prosecutors said they would wait until after the sentencing to discuss the case.
Authorities accused Conners of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. Although Kentucky’s age of consent is 16, the felony she was indicted under makes it illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student under age 18, the Enquirer reported.
Their relationship was exposed when rumors became the talk of the town. Administrators have declined to comment about how the relationship arose or where the sexual activity took place. The student may have played football, according to the Enquirer.
Conners, who lives in Ohio, resigned from her position May 3, a day after the Fort Thomas Independent School District began investigating the claims, according to ABC affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati.
“Please know that the discretion we have shown in the release of information is a direct result of the ongoing investigation and an effort to protect the rights and privacy of our students,†Schools Superintendent Gene Kirchner said in a statement last month.
Conners remains out on a $5,000 bond and was ordered not to contact the victim, according to reports.
