The wait is almost over, and Mass Effect 3 fans upset with the trilogy’s ending will either find closure or find new reasons to be upset with BioWare and Electronic Arts. On June 26th, the Extended Cut DLC will launch, free of charge, for anyone unsatisfied with the game’s lack of closure.

“The Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is a downloadable content pack that will expand upon the events at the end of Mass Effect 3,” the game’s website reads. “Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Extended Cut will include deeper insight to Commander Shepard’s journey based on player choices during the war against the Reapers. The Extended Cut will be available to download at no additional charge on June 26th on Xbox 360 and PC and PlayStation 3.”

Here’s an interview with lead producer Casey Hudson and lead writer Mac Walters on the ending controversy and the extended cut:

Mass Effect 3 New Ending Details!

Essentially, releasing an “extended cut” rather than any actually new endings helps BioWare save face. While I find the artistic integrity argument ultimately wrong-headed, I do think it makes sense to try to avoid any major changes – if clarification will suffice.

For instance, if the Indoctrination Theory is true, there’s little point in changing the ending when an explanation is all that’s in order.

That being said, whether clarification can patch up anger over fans’ feelings that their choices ultimately didn’t affect the outcome of the game is harder to say. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
