Katy Perry is releasing a documentary about her life on  July 5th called, Katy Perry: Part of Me, that will document the highs and lows of her career and her personal life. Katy has had some backlash about the documentary because she’s including her marriage issues with ex-husband, Russell Brand, in the film. Katy explains that she wanted fans to see her at her absolute lowest so they know that they can bounce back from anything thrown at them. Read what else she said below.

Katy Perry, appearing on The Tonight Show Jay Leno Thursday night, says she left the lowlights of her failed marriage to comic Russell Brand in her new release Katy Perry: Part of Me, to preserve the integrity of the 3D documentary.

“Just because you’re in the spotlight doesn’t mean you get to dodge the curveballs — they’re actually bigger,” the Wide Awake singer told Leno. “I think if you were to see the movie and it was completely avoided, you’d think, ‘Hmm that’s strange, I know something else happened in her life last year.'”

Katy said she wanted to handle the split “delicately with the most integrity I could, and show, ‘Yeah I’m going through the same situation that half of America goes through and somehow I landed on my feet.'”So you don’t have to lay down and die like you think.”

The Firework singer added that “it wasn’t always exciting to watch those unflattering scenes where I’m crying and having an intense moment, but I think people will relate to me more seeing me at my lowest point and now at my highest point.”

The 27-year-old singer — who’s been seen with Robert Ackroyd, a guitarist for the band Florence + The Machine since the break-up — told The Hollywood Reporter this week she still believes in love and marriage.

“I’ve just learned lessons along the way,” she said. “I regret nothing.”

As we previously reported, Brand filed for divorce from Perry December 30 following a 14-month marriage which began with a lavish India wedding.

Katy Perry: Part of Me, hits theaters on Thursday, July 5.
