HESPERIA, Calif. (KTLA) — Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 28-year-old homeless man Tuesday, claiming he raped his ex-girlfriend before kidnapping her and pawning electronics he stole from her home.
Deputies responded just after 9:05 a.m. to a report of domestic violence at a home in the 16000 block of Sultana Street. A boy there called 911 to report his mother’s ex-boyfriend — Leonard Karsky Baker, 28, a transient from the Hesperia area — was inside the family’s home, according to a news release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Baker was still at the home when deputies arrived and tried to run away but was soon found hiding behind a wall at a nearby apartment complex, according to the news release. Deputies spoke with the woman — who was not identified — and she said Baker entered her home about 4:30 a.m. through a second-story sliding door.
The woman told deputies Baker woke her up and raped her. He then took electronics that belonged to her children and forced the woman to drive him to several gas stations and pawn shops, where he sold the items to obtain cash, according to the news release.
Baker took the woman’s cell phone and threatened to harm her children if she did not do what he demanded, according to the news release. After driving around, they returned to the home. That’s when the woman’s son woke up and called 911.
Deputies arrested baker on suspicion of kidnapping, assault with intent to commit rape, false imprisonment, corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant, burglary, intimidation of a witness and stalking.
He was booked at Victor Valley Jail. His bail was set at $250,000
