It’s official, Lou Williams is opting out. Â The move is an expected one, but on Saturday, Williams filed his paperwork to opt out of the fifth and final year of his contract. Â Read more after the jump.
Williams’ agent Leon Rose confirmed that Williams filed the paperwork on Saturday.
The move certainly isn’t a surprise. In fact, team president Rod Thorn expected the move too.
Williams led the Sixers in scoring with 14.9 points per game off the bench this past season. While he is opting out, it doesn’t mean he won’t return to the Sixers. They’ll be able to sign him during free agency, which begins July 1, if they choose.
Williams has been with the Sixers for all seven of his NBA seasons after being selected in the second round of the 2005 draft. He has started just 38 games (all in 2009-10) with the Sixers. Testing the free-agent market might give him the opportunity to start in another city.
