George Zimmerman fears for his wife’s safety after she was arrested Tuesday and her mug shot made public, according to the accused killer’s lawyer. “Certainly now that she’s been charged with a crime he’s worried about her, and also worried now that she’s out in the public eye,” Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara told ABC News Tuesday night.
O’Mara added that his client has “legitimate safety concerns.”
Shellie Zimmerman’s mug shot was the first time the general public had seen the woman, as the couple has been in hiding in Florida since the Feb. 26 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Her husband is charged with second-degree murder in that case.
Police arrested Shellie Zimmerman after a series of phone conversations in which the couple discussed the hidden funds were released.
At the time of the calls, George Zimmerman had already been charged in Martin’s death.
During a call recorded on April 16, Shellie Zimmerman confirms to her husband he had $155,000 in his bank account, a prosecutor said.
