Two people were killed and at least 21 wounded late Saturday night into this morning in shootings across the city, several of which involved two or more people shot at once, according to Chicago police.
Police officials were still gathering a list of confirmed shootings and victims during a hectic night Saturday into Sunday that saw officers in some districts racing from one shooting to another. Preliminary numbers indicated that 21 people were wounded, police said.One person — a 16-year-old boy — died after being shot on the porch of his Southwest Side home about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said. The boy, Joseph Briggs, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Donnell Smith, 50, was shot in the stomach about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the 7500 block of South Drexel Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood has died, authorities said.
Smith, of the 8100 block of South Talman Avenue, was first taken to Jackson Park Hospital before being transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
Perhaps no district was busier than the Near West Side’s Ogden District, where a total of 10 people were shot in just two separate shootings late Saturday into early Sunday.
In one incident, six people — which included four victims younger than 20 — were wounded as they stood with a large group in the 3300 block of West Douglas Boulevard in the Lawndale neighborhood at about 2:15 a.m., police said.
One of the victims, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition for gunshot wounds to the buttocks and groin, police said.
The other victims, a 24-year-old man, a 16-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman, all suffered non-serious wounds. A 19-year-old man who suffered a graze wound to the head during the same attack showed up at hospital several hours later.
Earlier in the evening, four people, including a 15-year-old boy, were wounded in a drive-by-shooting in the 1300 block of South Avers Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood just before 11 p.m. Saturday, police said.
All four victims, ages 15, 20, 21, and 25, were taken to area hospitals in good condition with gunshots to the legs, police said. The teen suffered only a graze wound, police said.At about 3 a.m., police discovered a male victim with multiple gunshots to his leg and abdomen in the 3800 block of West Ferdinand Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
While investigating that shooting, police said two more shooting victims from that scene showed up at Mount Sinai with non-serious wounds, police said.
In other shootings:
About 6:09 a.m. today, two men were shot in the 2500 block of South Homan Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, police said. One man was shot in the ankle and the other in the thigh. Their conditions were not known.
About 4:33 a.m. today, two males, ages 34 and 19, were shot in the 2500 block of South Sawyer Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, police said. The 19-year-old was shot twice in the back and is in critical condition at Mt. Sinai; the 34-year-old was shot in the stomach and was in serious condition at Stroger.
About 3:50 a.m. this morning, a 36-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 1900 block of West Howard Street in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. He was in at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition has stabilized.
About 3:30 a.m. this morning, a 19-year-old male was shot in the leg in the 1600 block of South Komensky Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood, police said. He was in good condition at Stroger hospital.
About 2:07 a.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the 3400 block of West Lake Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. No other details were available.
About 10:27 p.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was wounded in the back from shots fired from a white car in the 7500 block of N. Ridge Boulevard in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. The victim ran from the scene to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he is in good condition.Since Friday evening, four others have been killed in shootings.
Derrick Wilkerson, 21, of the 11800 block of South Indiana Avenue, was shot while with his brother at 111th and Edbrooke Avenue about 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Wilkerson was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Mario Jackson, 26, of the 5100 block of South Morgan Street, and Rashaun Stephany, 22, of the 1300 block of West 49th Street, were shot and killed Friday afternoon just before 5 p.m. in the 5100 block of South May Street, according to the medical examiner’s office. Both were pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County about 5:30 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
About 1 a.m. Saturday, Kenneth J. Jones, was shot and killed during a robbery in the 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue. Jones of the 3800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. Jones was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.
