The gunman who took up to 10 hostages captive at an Indiana real-estate office earlier today shot himself twice in the head and later died.
The hostages had either been freed or escaped before the seven-hour standoff came to an end. SWAT officers stormed the offices of Prudential Executive Group Real Estate when they heard two gunshots, and they discovered the gunman with two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head, police said.
The siege in Valparaiso began at 10 a.m. when the gunman, whose name has not been released, struck an employee in the head with a gun just outside the office, then fired his pistol into the air, entered the office and took the hostages.
The injured woman was treated and released from a hospital, and nobody else was hurt, Valparaiso Police Sgt. Mike Grennes told reporters.
The gunman reportedly said one of the agents, who was not present, owed him money, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
Grennes confirmed to NBC News that gunfire was exchanged between his officers and the armed hostage taker shortly after 10 a.m. when they arrived on the scene.
The FBI as well as local and state police remained in a standoff with the gunman for most of the day. Video showed fire crews blocking off intersections around the complex.
FBI agents entered the building around noon, but had not come into direct contact with the gunman, reports the Northwest Indiana Times.
