Surveillance video from the Federal Laundromat in Camden surfaced online last week and went viral. The video showed a man and a woman, originally believed to be the child’s parents, in front of a row of front-loading washing machines with a little boy.
The man can be seen playfully putting the tot into one of the machines and closing the door while the woman looks on. The pair then panic when the door locks and the spin cycle starts with the child still inside.
The boy was finally saved when laundromat employee Kong Enh cut power to the machine.
Sakia David, 22, had no idea what had happened to her son, Saimeir Bush, until she saw the tape, the Courier Post reported.
A woman named Sandra had been watching Saimeir that day, David said in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show. David has said that the sitter is the girlfriend of the boy’s father, who is currently incarcerated.
Sandra didn’t say anything about the incident at the laundromat when David came home from work on May 11, David told NBC, saying instead that Saimeir had fallen down some steps and hit his head.
David said she doesn’t know the man in the tape, who has been identified only as a friend of the babysitter.
When the distraught mom contfronted Sandra about the tape, the sitter denied that it was her, David told ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.
The Camden County prosecutor’s office decided Wednesday not to press charges against the sitter and her acquaintance.
“This was not an intelligent choice to put the baby in the washing machine, but it was not a crime,” prosecutor’s office spokesman Jason Laughlin told CNN.
