Cassie:

“My mother is my hero. She always taught my brother and I that knowledge is power. She always encouraged us to keep reading, keep learning. Being well-educated on anything in life is something that no one can ever take from you. She is now writing her own book about our family ancestry. I’m so proud of her and happy that I’ll have hard copy proof of my family history to share with my own children one day.”

Asap Rocky:

“I remember when I was 7 or 8 [years old] at a cookout while on vacation with family inHarrisburg,Penn. My mom kept getting upset with me and told me to stop running around the back yard because I was bumping into grown-ups. I tripped over the speaker chord after not listening. I busted my lip and my teeth got stuck in the wall! People were laughing but trying to help. My mother said that’s a lesson. Always listen to your moms!”

Kendrick Lamar:

“Me and my momma grew up together. She was young, I was the only child at the time, and my father was out in the streets tryna make things possible for us. On foot, we would go out and handle her business. Them long walks to the county building was most memorable because of the conversations we had. She never talked to me as a lil’ boy or a baby. I was a grown lil’ man in her eyes. Ultimately, them walks consisted of her saying, and I quote, ‘Stay the fuck outta people business and treat others the way you want to be treated, and God will bless you Kendrick. Listen to me.’ So today she says my ears couldn’t have been even more bigger because today I’m blessed more than she could have ever imagined.”
