BMW is recalling certain 2012 3 Series models for head restraints that can be raised beyond the federal limit.

As a result, in a collision, the head rest could move down slightly, increasing the risk of a neck injury. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers 7,600 vehicles manufactured between October 18, 2011 and March 18, 2012.

BMW plans to notify owners this month, and dealers will address the problem by installing a small clip to limit the head rest’s travel. The work will, of course, be done for free.
