Former NFL great Junior Seau, who played most of his career at linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, has died. He was 43.

“Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now. We ask everyone to stop what they’re doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family,” the team said in a statement.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported a 911 call came from Seau’s Oceanside home at 10 a.m. local time.

Seau, who played for 20 seasons in the NFL, mostly for the Chargers, was named to the Pro Bowl 12 times and first team All-Pro six times. He also played for the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. His last season was in New England in 2009.

The Chargers selected Seau with the fifth overall pick in the 1990 draft from USC. He had starred in high school in Oceanside, a coastal city about 38 miles north of San Diego.

In 2010, Seau survived a 30-foot plunge in his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad. Hours earlier, he had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his 25-year-old girlfriend at his home. He was not charged in the incident.

Seau is the eighth member of the 1994 Chargers, who reached the Super Bowl and lost to to the San Francisco 49ers, to die at a young age. He was predeceased by Chris Mims, David Griggs, Rodney Culver, Lewis Bush, Curtis Whitley, Shawn Lee and Doug Miller.
