This past week, Anderson Silva released his biography, Fighters Only, in Rio de Janeiro. According to Silva, “the biography says the truth of everything that happened since my childhood until this moment. It documents day-to-day frustrations, what is good, what is bad, and how it is bad to stay away from the family. The book tells my life.†In one of the standout moments of his book, the UFC middleweight champion talks about the time he almost killed his trainer, Rafael Cordeiro.
Before his MMA career got off the ground, Anderson was making ends meet by teaching jiu-jitsu classes. However, Cordeiro didn’t want Silva to continue the classes. The two got into a heated argument that resulted in Silva receiving a slap to the face. With a feeling of anger and disrespect, Silva went to Cordeiro’s residence with a shotgun and waited for his trainer to return. Eventually, the two men that accompanied The Spider talked him out of it.
Nowadays, Silva and Cordeiro remain good friends. But that may change when Rafael reads the biography. Anderson has never told him about the incident or his intentions on that night. When he thinks back to that near life-altering moment, Silva recalls, “that was a phase in my life in which I had nothing but the gift God gave me to give classes and I almost did a foolish [thing].” Yeah, that may be a bit of an understatement.
