comScore’s latest report on the Android tablet market is sure to give many manufacturers pause, as it claims that Amazon’s Kindle Fire captured over half of the market in a matter of just a few months.
According to the report, the Kindle Fire holds 54.4 percent of the Android tablet market, with the nearest competitor being Samsung’s various Galaxy Tab tablets that collectively have 15.4 percent of the market. comScore notes that the Kindle Fire nearly doubled its market share between December and February, while the rest of the field saw their share shrink over the same period. The Motorola XOOM was the third most popular Android tablet with 7 percent share, while the ASUS Transformer and Toshiba AT100 claimed 6.3 percent and 5.0 percent share, respectively.
This study seems to confirm that despite Samsung’s best efforts at offering a variety of different size Android tablets, it has not been able to capture the general tablet buyer’s attention. In what seems to be a direct response to Amazon’s success with the low-cost Kindle Fire, Samsung is offering the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 at a a very aggressive $249 price point. Whether or not this will cause consumers to choose it over Amazon’s option remains to be seen, however.
