Congrats to RG3! SUBWAY has signed former Baylor quarterback and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III to an endorsement contract. RG3, as he is known, is to become SUBWAYS’s latest Famous Fan. RG3 is expected to be taken with the second overall pick in next week’s NFL draft, a slot the WashingtonRedskins currently hold, giving the quick service restaurant a solid “FAN†in the Washington, DC market. SUBWAY currently has over 25,000 locations in the United States.
Next week, SUBWAY will build an RG3 bust from its currently featured “Smokehouse BBQ Chicken†at a SUBWAY store in midtown Manhattan. Print ads will appear in Sports Illustrated and USA Today with commercial spots likely following.
Other SUBWAY famous fans include: Blake Giffin (Could make for an interesting commercial with a play on the Griffin last name), Apolo Ohno, Carl Edwards, CC Sabathia, Michael Phelps, Ryan Howard, Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan, Jay Glazer, Ndamukong Suh & Nastia Liukin.
According to Bob Dorfman, EVP of Baker Street Advertising, SUBWAY traditionally signs a top college football prospect to a short-term deal around this time every year to capitalize on the NFL Draft hype, but RG3 is a pitchman SUBWAY could stick with long term. Added Dorfman, “His amazing physique fits well with the brand’s “healthy choice†message, and while draft position is no guarantee of future success as an NFL quarterback, his prospects of becoming a star in the league are bright. He’s articulate, charismatic, and has the talent to make a difference immediately.â€
Experts believe that RG3′s contract with SUBWAY is likely a 6-figure endorsement deal. Ben Sturner, Founder and CEO of Leverage Agency believes that given the exposure the QSR has provided for it’s “Famous Fans†such as Michael Strahan in the past, the exposure SUBWAY will be able to provide for RG3 is enormous.
Industry giant CAA Sports is responsible for all of RG3′s marketing deals. CAA and RG3 have done nicely pre-draft, signing endorsement contracts withAdidas, EA Sports and Castrol Oil.
