The Mayweather-Pacquiao dream fight that everyone has been anticipating is about as much of a tease in sports as you can possibly get. And if it does ever happen, it will be a surprise to all of us.

On a conference call promoting the April 14th fights between Juan Manuel Marquez-Serhiy Fedchenko and Brandon Rios-Richard Abril, the obligatory “Will Pacquiao and Mayweather fight this year?” question was once again brought up to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. As always, Arum addressed the question and seemed just as worn down answering it as people are asking it.

“For what I know, Mayweather hasn’t made himself available for the fall,” Arum said wearily. With Mayweather having to adhere to his 90-day jail sentence in June, the possibility that he would be available for a November fight against Pacquiao seems highly unlikely. As always, Arum is looking at other options for Pacquiao should he get past Timothy Bradley on June 9th. One of those options would be a fourth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, who took Pacquiao to the brink but lost a highly controversial majority decision last November.

“Marquez deserves a rematch against Pacquiao,” Arum said, citing that Marquez must first get past Fedchenko on April 14th and be willing to wait for Pacquiao. “That’s what I’ll be focusing on. Manny can chase the wild rabbit if he wants to. I think everybody would be better off if we talk about that fight next year.”

It’s safe to say that if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight doesn’t happen this year, it may lose most of its relevance.
