Twitter shut down TweetDeck on Friday, allegedly because of a bug that exposed a number of user accounts without permission, and allowed one user to access them.
“TweetDeck is currently down while we look into an issue. Apologies for the inconvenience,” TweetDeck wrote via its official Twitter account.
According to TechCrunch, Australian TweetDeck user Geoff Evason discovered the problem on Friday afternoon, and tweeted his discovery.
“Hey @Tweetdeck A bug in your software has given me access to hundreds of accounts. #YouShouldLookIntoThat /cc @Twitter” Evason tweeted.
Twitter issued a new update for TweetDeck on March 22, complete with list management, activity and interactions, and inline media previews.
He later offered to send the service details of the bug to Twitter and TweetDeck, who apparently hadn’t taken him up on his offer at press time. Evason also tweeted from another account just to test the capability and prove that he could do so.
There were no other reports of TweetDeck users being affected by the bug, although Evason naturally concluded that he wasn’t alone. “I’d be surprised if I was the only one exposed to the bug though… :-S”, Evason added.
