Yesterday, minutes after the Jets (re)traded for Tebow, Khan issued a statement through the Jags’ website.  Check out what he had to say after the jump…

New Jaguars owner Shahid Khan didn’t try to hide the fact that he was smitten with Tim Tebow. Here’s what he said in February when asked if he would’ve taken Tebow in the 2010 draft:

“One-hundred percent I would have [drafted Tebow]. Absolutely…Obviously the Rams drafted Sam Bradford, and I was talking to (former owner) Wayne (Weaver) then on what they ought to do. … I don’t want to get into 20/20 hindsight, and God help us, the draft record has not been the best with the Jaguars,” Khan added.

Which is all fine and dandy except that Jacksonville general manager Gene Smith wanted no part of Tebow then, and that still held after Tebow lost out in the Peyton Manning Sweepstakes. A full 10 days before Manning decided on Denver, the AP‘s Mark Long tweeted that “As long as Gene Smith is making personnel decisions, Tim Tebow will NOT play QB for the Jaguars. Let it go!”

Which was easy for most folks, but most folks don’t currently own the Jags. And that’s why last weekend we ranked Jacksonville as the most likely destination for Tebow, even though they had Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne on the roster.
