Juan Manuel Marquez, who will headline the first boxing event at the new 22,300-seat Mexico City Arena on April 14, got a new opponent on Friday.

Marquez, who will be fighting in his hometown for the first time since 1994, his second year as a professional, will face 30-year-old Sergey Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KOs) of Ukraine, Sean Gibbons of Zanfer Promotions, Marquez’s promoter, told ESPN.com. They will meet for a vacant interim junior welterweight title.

Marquez, 38, the three-division champion and one of boxing’s biggest names, was due to face Cesar Rene Cuenca (42-0, 1 KO) of Argentina, but he was scratched from the fight. Zanfer said the reason was a disagreement concerning his purse.

Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) had hoped to fight rival Manny Pacquiao in a fourth fight after a controversial majority decision loss to him in November. However, Pacquiao decided instead to defend his welterweight title against junior welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr. on June 9.

Rather than sit around waiting for a major fight, Marquez elected to return home to stay busy and fight at Mexico City Arena, which opened in February.

Similar to Cuenca, Fedchenko has never faced a significant opponent. He has won seven consecutive fights since losing a majority decision to South Africa’s Kaiser Mabuza, who later fought for a junior welterweight title, in September 2009 in Ukraine.

Zanfer Promotions chief Fernando Beltran is planning a March 22 news conference in Mexico City to announce the fight.
