Evidently loyalty is funny to Dwyane Wade. Or something.
Following Dwight Howard press conference Thursday, Wade tweeted about it with what appeared to be a mocking tone. It read, “Loyalty hahahahaha.”
What did it mean exactly? Does Wade not believe in loyalty? Was he calling Howard a liar? Was he simply responding to another player that tweeted props to Howard for being loyal? Friday, Wade tried to explain it to reporters. Via the Sun Sentinel:
“It’s the world we live in. It is in anything, it ain’t just the NBA. It’s in any part of life. So loyalty is not just about one person. When I say, ‘Loyalty, ha ha,’ that’s the world, damned if you do, damned if you don’t. It’s going to be bad things said about you, whatever you choose to do.”
[…]
“People still call me a traitor. I don’t know why. I’ve been in Miami for nine years. It doesn’t matter, man. Whatever you decide, if it’s not what everyone wants you to decide, then everyone is not going to be in agreement. But you can’t live your life worrying about that, at all. No one can. That’s why you have fun with it. That’s why I like to enjoy it and have fun with it.”
LeBron’s name came up as well during Howard’s presser and while Howard was very polite and cordial about LeBron’s “decision,” the Heat superstar talked about how he understands his name gets dragged into things every time something like this happens.
“Everyone keeps comparing all these guys’ situations to mine,” James said.
“I fulfilled my contract in Cleveland. I was an unrestricted free agent and I could have done whatever I wanted to do. I was free, that’s what the collective bargaining is all about. That’s why the rules is put in like that. … I think the best thing about (Howard) is he’s happy. The organization is happy that he’s staying and they can move on with their season. But none of their situations — not Chris Paul, not Carmelo Anthony, not Dwight Howard — none of their situations is like mine.”
The Heat have a different perspective on things and even with Wade’s explanation, it’s kind of hard to figure what he really meant about Howard. He didn’t say it was directly mocking the Orlando center, but didn’t say it wasn’t either.
Again: The Heat play the Magic on Sunday.
