Thurgood Marshall was the first African American to serve as a United States Supreme Court justice. Before becoming a judge, Marshall was a lawyer who argued many cases in front of the Supreme Court including Brown v. Board of Education. Because he argued the most cases ever in front of the Supreme Court, he was nominated by President Kennedy as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
