New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs apologized Wednesday night for telling reporters Tuesday that Gisele Bundchen should “stay cute and shut up.”
Jacobs, speaking on The Doug Gottlieb Show, said he should respect Tom Brady’s wife.
“Given the fact that it’s a colleague of mine’s wife, I do apologize for saying that, because I shouldn’t have said that,” Jacobs said Wednesday. “It’s his wife and I should respect that just as much as anyone else.”
Jacobs, however, stood by his comments on Bundchen’s appearance, again calling her “cute.”
“No question, he should take that as a compliment,” Jacobs said. “If he finds something wrong with that, then that’s his problem.”
Patriots receiver Wes Welker failed to make a difficult catch in the fourth quarter that might have helped New England ice a victory Sunday in Super Bowl XLVI. Tight end Aaron Hernandez and wide receiver Deion Branch also had balls hit off their hands during the Patriots’ final desperation drive.
“My husband cannot f—— throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times,” the supermodel and wife of the famed quarterback said in a video captured by theinsider.com, a gossip website.
Not every Giants player thought that Bundchen should zip it.
“I mean, that is her husband,” defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora said. “She is supposed to stay out of things like that, but at the end of the day that is their relationship and she has the right to say whatever she wants to.”
Asked if an apology should be forthcoming, Umenyiora said: “Nah, she shouldn’t. Listen, man, we just won the Super Bowl. We are not saying nothing about no one, whatever her name is.”
After the game, Welker said he let the team down when he failed to pull in a Brady pass he says he catches “1,000 times.”
“Wes is a phenomenal player and a teammate,” Brady said. “I love that guy.”
Neither Brady nor a Patriots spokesperson would comment on what Bundchen said. But defensive back James Ihedigbo said Welker was a big reason the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl, and he’s not to blame for the loss.
“You can’t point fingers at anybody. Wes made amazing plays all season,” Ihedigbo said. “You win it as a team; you win it and lose it as a team. And we lost to a good football team.”
Bundchen made headlines leading into the game when the media received an email she sent urging her close family and friends to pray for Brady on Sunday.
