Known by only one name, Storai, the doomed 28-year-old mother of three daughters, was killed on Saturday in the village of Mohasili, according to Afghan police.
Her mother-in-law was nabbed a short time later, but her killer husband was still on the loose and believed to be hiding out with other heavily armed militiamen somewhere in the Kunduz Province, police said.
“The existence of militiamen is a huge problem and therefore we face difficulty in arresting him,” Kunduz police chief Sufi Habib told local media.
Nadera Geya, head of the Kunduz women’s affairs department, called Storai’s strangling one of the worst examples of violence against women she has encountered.
But violence against women is commonplace in Afghanistan, a deeply conservative and religious Islamic country racked with widespread ignorance and poverty.
Just last November, an Afghan family in the same province that had refused to give their daughter to a man they considered a loser was attacked by the spurned suitor and his three brothers, reports said.
The attackers doused both parents and three children with acid.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has announced that he will hold a conference in February aimed at eliminating violence against women.
But with U.S. and allied troops set to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and peace talks with the ultraconservative Taliban a possibility, civil rights groups fear whatever gains women have made in recent years will fall by the wayside.
