Manny Pacquiao has renewed his faith in God, In an interview with Manila-based ABS-CBN News, Pacquiao said he had denounced his vices after having a recent epiphany and was now taking Bible study classes and spending more time with his wife and children.
“If I had died last year or in the last two years, I am sure I would’ve gone straight to Hell … My faith in Him is there 100 percent, but behind it, I was still (being) the Devil’s advocate,” Pacquiao told the station. “I was still doing evil.”
It was not reported whether Pacquiao talked about the possibility of a fight with Mayweather during the interview, which will air in the Philippines Friday night.
A Las Vegas judge ruled last week that Mayweather could start his 90-day jail stint June 1 after his guilty plea to domestic violence charges. He was initially set to report to jail Jan. 6, but the judge agreed to delay the sentence to allow the 34-year-old to fight May 5 at the MGM Grand.
The unexpected ruling immediately led to speculation that the door had been opened for the highly-anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao matchup.
Mayweather chimed in Tuesday via Twitter, writing, “Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see. My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk.”
Pacquiao said this week that all Mayweather had to do to make the fight happen was agree to a 50 percent split of the purse.
The Filipino’s promoter Bob Arum and financial adviser Michael Koncz, however, said Wednesday they preferred their charge to fight at the end of May or start of June — after the completion of a new 45,000-seat arena in Las Vegas.
The MGM Grand, where Mayweather is scheduled to hold his May 5 fight, only holds 17,000 people.
