To a homeless couple, the bodies of a father who had slain his 9-year-old son and then killed himself weren’t a tragedy, they were an opportunity. Not only did they rob the bodies, Jerod Reeves sawed off the Denver dad’s fingers after he was unable to pry the gun from his cold dead hand. Click below to read the rest fo the story.
In a jailhouse interview, Reeves defended what he did saying, “I did what I had to do that night to survive.â€
“Anyone that goes and finds a dead body in the wilderness and sees a freakin’ wallet with some cash in it, they’re going to take it,†said Reeves, 29. “I don’t care who you are.â€
Reeves said the only misgivings he had were about hacking off William Ahrold’s digits.
“That was pretty crazy,†he told Denver’s 9News. “I’m not really sure. I should have left that there.â€
The twisted tale began around Dec. 9 when — for reasons still unclear — Ahrold, 62, shot his son and then took his own life.
Eight days later, a federal park worker found the bodies — minus wallet and fingers — and Ahrold’s white van in Grand Junction near the Colorado River.
It didn’t take long for cops to zero in on the two zeroes suspected of robbing the corpses, Reeves and his girlfriend, Kimberly McCaffery, 35.
They were caught on surveillance footage using Ahrold’s credit card and cops later found the car they had been driving abandoned in Wyoming, The Denver Post reported.
Reeves and McCaffery were finally nabbed in Washington State and hauled back to Grand Junction, where they spilled their story to a reporter after a court hearing.
“I kind of got an uneasy feeling,†Reeves said, after he and McCaffery stumbled across Ahrold’s wheels.
“I knew something was wrong,†he said. “I looked in the van and saw the tarp. It looked like he made a bed for him and his kid.â€
Reeves said he didn’t spot the boy’s body until they were about to leave.
“I kept telling Jerod we needed to go, we needed to get out of there,†McCaffrey said.
They are charged with tampering with physical evidence, criminal trespass and abuse of a corpse. Both were being held on $150,000 bond.
