The unidentified 22-year-old accidentally shot himself in the head while trying to prove to a woman that it was unloaded and safe, KFMB-TV reported.

The serviceman is on life support at a hospital in San Diego, police told the TV station.

According to the report, the incident began when he tried to get the woman to hold his gun.

When she refused, he insisted it was safe — and put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Officials at first reported the serviceman had died.

On the TV’s station’s website, one woman who claims to be friends with the victim emotionally blasted commenters who joked about the accident, calling the Navy SEAL “a great and fine young man.”

“He was a son, brother, and friend to many that loved him. YES, alcohol and firearms do not mix. We all know this but, for Gods sakes, have some compassion,” she added.

Commodore Collin Green told the Associated Press that the Naval Special Warfare community is saddened by the incident and extends its “hearts and prayers” to the family at this difficult time.
