A Navy pilot and his sister were among four people murdered mysteriously on New Year’s Day in a swanky San Diego-area condo. This is a horrible way for the families involved in this situation to start of the new year. Click below to read the story.

David Reis, 25, who was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, lived in the three-story abode in wealthy Coronado with two roommates, both of whom were also believed to be in the military.

Reis was close to his 24-year-old sister, Karen, who lived nearby and supported herself by coaching volleyball and working at a grocery store.

“This kind of thing doesn’t happen to people like her and David,” said Rebecca Bailey, who played volleyball with Karen at the University of California, San Diego.

“Their family is the family everybody wants to be a part of. They’re just so loving, and there’s so much love in their family.”

Tom Reis, the slain siblings’ dad, said he can’t fathom what happened.

“He just had his first F/A-18 flight,” he said of his son. “Oh man, he loved it.”

Investigators are still probing the killings and have not yet released the names of the two other slain men, who were 25 and 31.

One of the male victims was found dead early Sunday of multiple gunshot wounds in the doorway of the condo. The others were found inside.

“I knew these guys were pilots because I was one and we’d talk about airplanes,” said neighbor Don Hubbard, a retired Navy commander. “Even now, you say, how could this have happened? What the hell is going on here?”

The condo-turned-crime scene is just a few blocks from the landmark Hotel del Coronado and a block from the main drag, which is lined with pricey boutiques and restaurants.

Coronado is also home to Naval Air Station North Island and is a sun-washed haven for Navy retirees. Multiple murders are unheard of.

Last year, however, another mysterious death in Coronado drew national attention.

In July, the girlfriend of multi-millionaire Jonah Shacknai was found naked, bound and hanging from the balcony of his oceanfront mansion.

Rebecca Zahau’s body was discovered two days after Shacknai’s son, Max, died in a freak accident.

While Zahau’s death was ruled a suicide, her family suspects foul play and has pleaded with authorities to reopen the investigation. So far they haven’t.
