Jason Taylor, one of the NFL’s top sack specialists of all time, is expected to call an end to his legendary career Sunday, according to a Miami Herald report Tuesday.

The newspaper, citing two Dolphins sources, reports Taylor has decided to step aside for good as the team’s all-time sacks leader following Sunday’s home game against the New York Jets.

The Herald said it was unclear if Taylor planned to hold a press conference before Miami’s final 2011 game to formally end his 15-year career.

With 139.5 sacks, active league leader Taylor is sixth on the NFL’s career list. The Pennsylvannia native trails only Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman and Michael Strahan among sack leaders.

Taylor, who became a free agent when the New York Jets released him in March, signed in August to rejoin the Dolphins. He has played in all 15 games for Miami, including one as a starter.

Taylor, who turned 37 in September, spent his first 11 seasons with the Dolphins and has long lived in South Florida. He played for Washington in 2008, then rejoined the Dolphins in 2009, and last year he had hoped for an offer to remain in Miami, but signed instead with the Jets.

The six-time Pro Bowler holds Dolphins career records for sacks (143), opponents’ fumble recoveries (27), fumble returns for touchdowns (6), defensive touchdowns (9) and interceptions by a defensive lineman (7). His best season was in 2006, when he was the NFL defensive player of the year.
