Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said Glen Grunwald is looking into signing an extra point guard for the roster, possibly a D-League player or recent cut, following an injury to rookie Iman Shumpert.  Read more after the jump.
Asked about recent cut Nate Robinson, D’Antoni smiled wide and said, “We’ll look into it.’’
Now that would be desperate move, but don’t count on it.
Multiple sources told The Post the D’Antoni-Robinson relationship was very bad and the head coach was just “being nice.” D’Antoni once put Robinson in the doghouse for 14 straight games during the 2009-10 season, prompting agent Aaron Goodwin to demand a trade for his client.
The coaches felt Robinson was a disruptive influence in the locker room.
Though he was labeled here as being immature, Robinson performed well in the 2010 NBA Finals vs. the Lakers when he was with the Celtics. Robinson was traded to the Thunder last season in the Jeff Green deal.
The Knicks depth at point guard situation is in disarray, with backup Mike Bibby missing the season opener with back spasms and Shumpert out 2-4 weeks with a sprained left knee.
The Knicks also lost reserve power forward Jared Jeffries for at least a week with a calf strain, leaving them thin there, too.
“It would probably be in the backcourt,” D’Antoni said of a potential signing. “You have three [point guards], two of them are questionable, one is out and one is hurt. You think maybe we have to do something. We’ll try to rectify the situation.’’
The Knicks have one roster spot open and D’Antoni said the signing could be a short-term situation. They may have eyes on forward Kenyon Martin in March. The Post reported Martin’s first choice is to be with the Knicks and Carmelo Anthony wants him in New York.
