The Cowboys’ DeMarco Murray was forced from Sunday night’s game against the Giants after suffering a right ankle fracture and high ankle sprain, likely ending his season.

Fractures typically take 6-8 weeks to heal, and the Cowboys have three games remaining in the regular season after Sunday.

Murray was injured with 4:54 left in the first quarter after an 8-yard run when Giants defensive end Dave Tollefson fell on the rookie running back’s ankle while making a tackle. He was taken for X-rays, and in the third quarter the club announced the severity of his injury.

He was replaced by Felix Jones, who lost his starting job to Murray after he suffered a left ankle sprain on Oct. 16 at New England.

Murray exploded onto the scene with a franchise-record 253 yards against St. Louis on Oct. 23. He entered Sunday’s game on track to become the Cowboys’ first 1,000-yard rusher since Julius Jones in 2007. He had 872 yards on the season and 25 yards on five carries against the Giants before getting hurt.

Jones is currently the only tailback on Dallas’ 53-man roster. The Cowboys placed Phillip Tanneron injured reserve last week to make room for wide receiver Andre Holmes. Tanner had been slowed by a hamstring injury. The Cowboys have Chauncey Washington on the practice squad.

The Cowboys also lost starting center Phil Costa to a concussion against the Giants.
