Miguel Torres found a rhetorical line that should not be crossed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and paid the price with his job.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship confirmed that it has fired the bantamweight ex-titleholder Thursday for a Twitter post from the previous day that he intended as a joke: “If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.”

But Dana White, president of UFC parent Zuffa, didn’t like that one and did not find it funny. He broke the news of Torres’ firing to SI.com; UFC later confirmed it to USA TODAY and other outlets.

Fighters with UFC parent Zuffa have been strongly encouraged by the company to use Twitter. Zuffa even doles out quarterly bonuses of $5,000 to fighters for creativity.

Zuffa generally has taken the position that it can’t be expected to police its fighters’ rhetoric. But the company has occasionally spoken to its athletes or other personnel, such as TV commentator Joe Rogan, about their language. White himself once apologized for his use of a term often associated with anti-homosexual sentiments.

But Zuffa never fired someone for their words before. White has often said that he understands people will say foolish things in the heat of the moment.
