Over 25 years since his last flight, Maverick may be taking to the air — and the big screen — once again.
By currently promoting his fourth “Mission: Impossible” film, Tom Cruise is once again making an exception for Ethan Hunt: he’s never revisited any other character in a feature film to date. That may change soon, though; as he told MTV, there’s been discussion with “Top Gun” director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer about revisiting one of the films that launched his star.
“I said to Tony, I want to make another movie with him… Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, ‘Wow, that would be… what we could do now,'” Cruise said.
The star sounded quite positive and gung ho about it, noting that the film’s cinematography, with its aerial battles and action-packed visuals, stand up today. Now, it’s all about plot.
“If we can find a story that suits what we all want to do,” he continued, “we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot ‘Top Gun.'”
Making the film would be a no-brainer, financially; back in 1986, the smash hit earned $353,816,701 at the worldwide box office. There’s also significant nostalgic interest in the film; earlier in the year, it was re-released by Paramount for a limited run to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Before he can reclaim his role as Maverick, though, Cruise has a heavy schedule. He’s in the midst of filming for “One Shot,” the Jack Reacher novel adaptation, will star in an adaptation of “Cloud Atlas” and has to promote the upcoming big screen adaptation of the musical “Rock of Ages.”
