Several students have been suspended and a criminal investigation is under way after a vicious beatdown at Dean College in Franklin — apparently over a pair of sneakers — was caught on camera and went viral on the Internet.
The video purports to show what happens when a man finds the person who stole his shoes. A college statement said the incident happened Friday evening.
“There was an altercation between two students on the Dean College campus,†a statement attributed to Dean College President Paula Rooney states. “The college became aware of the incident shortly thereafter and swift disciplinary action was taken; the student who was responsible for initiating the altercation was separated from the College on Friday evening.â€
The college reported that it acted before the video surfaced. The video shows a young man being followed by a person holding the camera. The man is then confronted by another man. The aggressor slaps the man’s hands down, then throws a punch with his right fist. The punch connects on the victim’s chin and knocks him to the ground.
The aggressor punches the victim again while he is on the ground and then pulls the shoes off his feet and beats him with the shoes. The attacker then strides off with the shoes.
“That video has provided additional insight and disturbing views of what transpired,†Rooney wrote in her statement. “We are taking a careful look at any person who may have been involved in this incident and we will deal with students in a manner that is in keeping with the standards of civility and personal responsibility that is expected of all Dean students, faculty and staff.â€
Greg Chalk, director of communications, said campus and Franklin police are investigating the attack. Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office said it was not aware of the video last night.
Chalk declined to name the students involved, or specify the number of students suspended. He said the college has undertaken proceedings to expel anyone involved in the attack, and could act against anyone who witnessed the attack and did not help the injured man.
“The safety of all members of our Community has always been and will continue to be our first priority, and Dean has zero tolerance for conduct that is detrimental to the safety and well-being of its students, faculty and staff,†Rooney wrote.
