Go ahead and boo him all you want. Brandon Jacobs doesn’t care.
Still fed up with jeers he heard during the Giants’ embarrassing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the oft-angry running back refused to back off the criticism he hurled at the Meadowlands crowd on Sunday night. He said “The best thing they do here is boo†after the fans let the Giants have it after their ugly, 17-10 loss.
In an interview on WFAN on Wednesday morning, the defiant Jacobs said “I don’t take nothing back what I said about our fans.â€
“When you come out and get booed like they do us, we’re only out there for ourselves,†Jacobs said on WFAN’s morning show, Boomer & Carton (You can listen to the audio right here). “We go out there and we play hard and we do whatever we got to do. It’s up to them whether or not they want to boo. And that’s what they do.
“It seems like we are playing at home and we’re out there by ourselves as well.â€
Though Jacobs tried, it’s hard to argue the Giants didn’t deserve the boos they heard, particularly when they were on offense. Their running game, in Tom Coughlin’s words, was “pathetic.†Jacobs’ performance fit that description, with 12 carries for a measly 21 yards.
Jacobs did say there was “no excuse†for a performance like that. But he also blamed the fans for making “it even harder to overcome adversity when they do things like that.†He said the fans need to realize that “When we’re down and going through adversity we need them to lift us up not take us down, that’s all I’m trying to say.â€
“I’m saying that we work hard and we go out there and play as hard as we can, and we already have trouble overcoming adversity,†Jacobs said. “For them to add more to the pot and stir it up that way, it makes it even harder for us to do something. That’s the message I’m trying to get across. It’s hard to play that way, especially when you’re at home.â€
It’s been a hard season for season for Jacobs, who only returned to the team because he agreed to take pay cut of $1.75 million. He’s still being paid a salary of $2.9 million, but for all that money all the Giants have gotten in return is 274 yards in eight games.
Jacobs, 29, not surprisingly has focused on the fact that he’s only gotten 90 carries – a fact which led him to say in a magazine article last month that he expects to soon be playing somewhere else. Then, after he only rushed four times for 10 yards in a 20-17 win over Miami on Oct. 30, Jacobs brushed off reporters and bragged about his “fast-ass car being delivered on Tuesday.â€
If all that hadn’t angered fans enough, he clearly struck a nerve after his dismal performance on Sunday night when he said of the Giants’ faithful “The best thing they do here is boo. I’m not worried about that. I’ve been hearing that for seven years.â€
