A Nassau County police officer involved in pursuing a suspicious vehicle was seriously injured in a crash that occurred when the fleeing driver hit the brakes, causing the officer’s patrol car to strike a guardrail and then get hit by another car on the Southern State Parkway.

The unidentified female officer with the Seventh Precinct, who is in her mid-40s and has been on the job nearly 20 years, was in serious but stable condition after being airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, police said.
The eastbound parkway was closed at Exit 31, Bethpage State Parkway, for about 41/2 hours while police investigated. Officials reopened the road shortly before 5 p.m.
