Earlier this week following the sudden death of Hip-Hop legend Heavy D, I had the opportunity to hear Christopher ‘Play’ Martin of ‘Kid ‘N Play’ speak on the incident and share his remembrance of his longtime friend. Check out what Martin had to say after the jump
In a lecture hall full of college students, Martin spoke very highly of Heavy D as his voice trembled while he contested the greatness of the legend. He discussed a conversation he had with Pete Rock who explained to him that Heavy D had possibly suffered from a bronchial related matter and that the funeral arrangements were set for November 17. Furthermore, Martin spoke of regretting canceling plans he had to meet up with Heavy D following the BET Hip-Hop Awards and left the audience with some words of advice stating, “Don’t take people for granted. Hug them while they’re here, appreciate them while they’re here because nothing is promised.”
Heavy D’s family has organized a public viewing on Thursday and a private service the following day. The invite list only includes close members of Heavy’s family and friends, including Diddy, Mary J. Blige, a few of the Wayans brothers, and former members of “Heavy D & The Boyz,” Eddie F and G-Whiz. Absent in the flesh, Heavy D will live on forever in the sound waves and heart of Hip-Hop.
